Sclerotherapy

Located in Bellevue and serving Sandusky, Fremont, and Norwalk, Ohio, the board-certified radiologists at Vein & Body Specialists offer effective sclerotherapy treatment for spider veins. Our highly-skilled specialists are known for providing caring, courteous, and expert service.

What Is Injection Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a vein treatment that is FDA approved and minimally invasive. During this treatment, Saline or Polidocanol® solution is injected into the affected vein. The vein is immediately irritated, forcing it to swell and turn to scar tissue. This procedure is highly effective in that the vein becomes invisible, and the blood recirculates through surrounding healthy veins.

How Does This Treatment Work?

This treatment works by using an effective and safe irritant solution, which will essentially dissolve the inner lining of the injected vein. Once the inner lining closes and the vein turns to scar tissue, the vein will disappear.

Painless Cryo Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy for spider veins is performed with the smallest needle available (30 gauge), and most people experience little to no pain. However, if sclerotherapy is uncomfortable for some, we can perform cryo sclerotherapy. Cryo sclerotherapy is a procedure performed before a sclerotherapy treatment to cool and numb the skin temporarily. A cryotherapy machine (Zimmer Cryo Chiller) is used to deliver cooled air to the targeted area, decreasing discomfort during the sclerotherapy treatment and helping to reduce inflammation. Cryo sclerotherapy offers a faster recovery time and less inflammation during treatment.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

Most patients require several sessions (3 – 5) over the course of 1 – 2 months. This process achieves the most optimal, long-term results. There is no downtime, and you can resume your regular routine following your appointment. The entire procedure takes about 15 – 30 minutes.

Is Injection Sclerotherapy Safe?

Sclerotherapy is a safe, FDA-approved procedure.

Will There Be Any Downtime?

The vast majority of patients resume daily activity immediately following the appointment.

What Are The Results?

You will have no visible bumps, lumps, or discoloration where the vein was on the leg. The blood that used to go through that vein will safely recirculate to healthy veins nearby, improving your circulation.

How Soon Will the Results Appear?

Results are visible for small and large veins the same day or up to 5 – 7 days afterward. Prominent veins are usually easier to treat and respond quickly to treatment due to the ease of inserting a needle for injection, and additional solution can be used.

How Long Does Injection Sclerotherapy Last?

Sclerotherapy sessions last between 15 – 30 minutes.

Who Should Avoid Injection Sclerotherapy?

Patients with veins larger than five mm in diameter would find greater benefits from another form of varicose vein treatment.

Am I a Candidate for Injection Sclerotherapy?

If your veins are less than five mm in diameter, and you would like to improve their appearance and function, you are likely a strong candidate for sclerotherapy.

How Much Does Injection Sclerotherapy Treatment Cost?

There is no one cost for sclerotherapy treatment, as the cost varies depending on the treatment needed. We will always ensure that you know the cost upfront and will work with you to determine a plan that is both affordable and effective. We offer financing options such as deposits on accounts prior to treatment, CareCredit®, and we accept credit cards (Master and Visa).

About Us

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is the ultrasound-assisted form of sclerotherapy. In ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy treatment, a board-certified radiologist guides an ultrasound device to detect veins that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Next, the radiologist maps out where the veins are located and which need to be treated. The remainder of the appointment is like sclerotherapy, in which a solution is injected into the targeted veins to dissolve them safely.

How Does This Treatment Work?

After one of our specialists determines the exact locations of your varicose veins with ultrasound, Polidocanol solution will be mixed with air to create foam (foam bubbles stick to the varicose vein longer, providing more irritation to scar it closed). Over time, the vein will seal completely, turn to scar tissue, and essentially disappear. This treatment is very effective for treating varicose veins.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

The number of treatments needed varies depending on the extent of vein damage. For most veins (both small and large), 3 – 5 sessions will typically be effective. Fortunately, the sessions are very short, and there is no downtime. All ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy procedures are done on an outpatient basis.

Is Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy Safe?

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is a safe procedure that is performed frequently.

Will There Be Any Downtime?

Most people can and are encouraged to resume daily activity immediately following their appointment. At your consultation, we will determine if there is any pre or post-care that you should consider. You may need to wear a compression wrap or compression stockings following the procedure.

What Are The Results?

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is very effective at treating varicose veins, resulting in improved circulation and appearance of the treated area.

Am I a Candidate for Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy?

Candidates for ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy will have prominent veins that are not visible through the skin. These veins may also be “complicated,” that is, twisted enough so that less invasive treatments will not be effective. Our specialists will assess your varicose veins with an ultrasound exam to determine if ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is appropriate for you.

How Much Does Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy Treatment Cost?

There is no one cost for ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy for vein treatment, as the cost varies depending upon the type of therapy specified in your treatment plan. We will always ensure that you know the cost upfront and will work with you to determine a plan that is both affordable and effective. We offer financing options such as deposits on accounts before treatment, CareCredit®, and we accept credit cards (Master and Visa).
