What Are Venous Ulcers?

A venous ulcer, or leg ulcer, is a wound or open sore on the leg which is slow or impossible to heal. Individuals with venous ulcers will notice that these sores will sometimes heal without treatment, only to reappear again without trauma or injury.

What Causes Venous Ulcers?

A venous ulcer occurs on the legs when there is poor circulation and weakened or damaged valves inside the veins. When the valves are weakened or damaged, the veins cannot effectively pump the blood back up to the heart. This results in a buildup of fluid in the lower extremities, leading to various issues, including ulcers, when the tissues around the engorged veins break down.

What Are the Symptoms of Venous Ulcers?

The first symptom of venous ulcers is swelling around the ankle and venous stasis dermatitis. The ulcer itself will likely appear next. Leg ulcers are purple or red wounds with cracked or scaly skin around them. In many cases, a varicose vein will be visible near the sore itself, displaying an identifying connection between the sore and underlying vein disease. It is common to feel pain and tenderness at the site of a venous ulcer, and it is vital to seek treatment to avoid infection.

What Is The Treatment of Venous Ulcers?

The most effective way to treat venous ulcers is by lowering the venous pressure. Venous pressure occurs when valves are weakened or damaged. This can cause many additional vein conditions and symptoms. Our effective vein treatments can help to correct this issue and prevent future vein ulcers from reoccurring.

At your initial consultation, we will assess your current symptoms, diagnose any underlying vein disease, and determine a safe, effective personalized treatment plan just for you. We may also recommend some at-home measures to lessen symptoms throughout treatment, such as compression stockings, leg elevation, or leg exercises.
