What Is Venous Stasis Dermatitis?

Venous stasis dermatitis typically occurs on the legs and feet and is characterized by inflammation caused by vein disease. This inflammation commonly occurs when the veins' valves become damaged or weakened. When this happens, blood and fluid can pool in the lower extremities, causing a buildup of pressure and resulting in inflammation and itching.

What Are the Symptoms of Venous Stasis Dermatitis?

Unlike some venous disorders, the onset of venous stasis dermatitis symptoms can happen suddenly. For others, the symptoms may present themselves slowly over time. Symptoms include:

  • General skin inflammation
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Flaking or scaly skin
  • Wounds or sores, which do not heal or heal slowly
  • Scabbing, crusting sores or skin
  • Fluid leaking from the skin
  • Discoloration, typically brown or red
  • Heaviness or restlessness in the legs

Who Is at Risk of Developing Venous Stasis Dermatitis?

This condition is most common in women over the age of 50 but can affect almost anyone. The following factors contribute to the onset of venous stasis dermatitis:

  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Obesity
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods, such as at work or when traveling
  • Varicose veins
  • Spider veins
  • History of blood clots, particularly in the legs
