What Is Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS)?
Post-thrombotic syndrome, or PTS, is a condition that affects up to 40 percent of patients who have had deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If a person who has had DVT continues to experience symptoms of blood clots, it is called post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS).
In DVT, blood clots can form deep in the veins, resulting in inflammation and damaged valves. Damaged valves can cause a buildup of pressure and fluid accumulation in the lower leg since the valves are not working correctly to prevent blood from flowing in reverse against gravity to the lower leg instead of back to the heart. This pressure and fluid buildup can result in swelling, discomfort, and ulcers (open areas).
What Are the Symptoms of Post-Thrombotic Syndrome?
PTS symptoms are often long-lasting and require medical treatment to see long-term alleviation. These symptoms include:
- Leg swelling
- Leg pain
- Leg heaviness
- Dry skin
- Discoloration in the leg or foot
- Skin ulcers (open areas)
- Difficulty standing for long periods
- Very large and painful varicose veins
Who Is at Risk for Post-Thrombotic Syndrome?
While some people who have had DVT are at risk for PTS, some factors can increase the likelihood of this condition developing. Risk factors include:
- Obesity
- Have had blood clots multiple times in the same leg
- Over 65 years of age
- Extensive blood clots are seen with ultrasound after being treated for several months or years with blood-thinning medications
- Difficulty keeping blood thinner levels stable throughout treatment for a deep vein blood clot
