BOTOX® Vs. DYSPORT®: What's The Difference, And Which One Is Best For You?

6/15/2022

Botox® and Dysport® are two of the most popular injectables for signs of aging in the upper part of the face. Both products contain the same active ingredient – botulinum A toxin. Injections work by relaxing the facial muscles that cause wrinkles along the forehead and around the eyes. The results of Botox® and Dysport® last about four to six months, and follow-up treatments are recommended every four months. Considering the similarities of the two products, are there really any differences, and which one is best for you?

HOW DOES BOTOX® AND DYSPORT® WORK?

Botox® and Dysport® are injectable anti-aging treatments that work on dynamic wrinkles. These types of wrinkles are unique because they are caused by contractions of your facial muscles. The botulinum A toxin in the two products temporarily relax the muscles, giving your skin time to soften lines and wrinkles. Both products can be used in the forehead area, at the corners of the eyes, and between the eyes.

CONCENTRATION OF THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT

The first key difference between Botox® and Dysport® is the concentration of botulinum A toxin. Based on 100 units, Botox® contains approximately 0.73 nanograms, and Dysport® contains approximately 0.65 nanograms of the active ingredient. This means that, given the same number of units per injection, Botox® will be more potent than Dysport®. TISSUE DISTRIBUTION At first, a higher potency in Botox® seems like the best option for anti-aging injectables, but this isn’t always the case. Because Dysport® has a lower amount of botulinum A toxin, the formulation contains more of other ingredients that enhance tissue distribution. Dysport® tends to spread in the tissues more than Botox®, and this makes it ideal for treating larger areas with less product compared to Botox®.

TREATMENT AREA

Due to the differences in how well Botox® and Dysport® spread through the muscle tissue, each has unique benefits for treating common signs of aging. The high concentration of botulinum A toxin and low spread of Botox® makes it ideal for crow’s feet and some lines between the eyes. On the other hand, the lower concentration of botulinum A toxin and relatively higher tissue distribution of Dysport® injections makes it good for treating wrinkles in the forehead area.

COST OF TREATMENT

Depending on the characteristics of your lines and wrinkles, such as severity and location, there may be a cost difference between Botox® and Dysport®. Exercise caution, though, when evaluating both products based on cost alone. Choosing one over the other based solely on cost may not produce the optimum results, and you may need touch-up treatments more often.
